SDS 302: What is Data Science to You?

Podcast Guest: Kirill Eremenko

October 4, 2019

Welcome to the FiveMinuteFriday episode of the SuperDataScience Podcast!
Today, I’ve got a special episode recorded at DSGO with the help of attendees
.
If you ask yourself to define what data science means to you, the answer can be a window into why it is you do what you do and why you continue to get up after failing and keep going in this field. So, I asked attendees at DSGO this question and got some great answers which you can hear in the episode.
But this is something to reflect on and think about. Think about your own answer and listen to the answers of fellow data scientists and hopefully you’ll walk away from this episode with a better understanding of how and why we do this and who we’re doing it for.

Kirill: This is FiveMinuteFriday, episode number 302, What is Data Science to You?

Kirill: Hey everybody, I am super pumped about today’s episode because I recorded it at DataScienceGO. And what I actually did is I was running around like a lunatic with a microphone and asking everybody I came across one question. And the question was “What is data science to you in one word?”
Kirill: So basically people had to describe what data science is to them in one single word. And that was very exciting. I got quite a few interesting answers. I asked over a dozen, actually a couple of dozen people. So we put that together into a fun compilation. And as you hear these answers, I’d like to encourage you to think about the question, what is data science to you? If you had to characterize it with one word, what is the first word that pops to mind?
Kirill: And that my friends will be the reason why deep down inside you actually do data science. Why it attracts you so much. Why you keep learning what you’re learning, why you keep waking up and persevering. And why you keep fighting this battle of getting the knowledge about data science, about applying it, about failing and getting up again, about keeping going forward about teaching others, about inspiring others, about applying your knowledge, about believing in data science.
Kirill:  It’s not just about using it now. You have to have a firm belief that data science will still be there tomorrow or the day after a month, a year from now. And all that stems from that one word that comes to your mind when you’re asked the question, what is data science to you? So something to think about and something to reflect on. It’s something to be excited about. All of these answers you hear are super, super exciting. So I hope you enjoy this and here we go.

Sarah: To knowledge.
Kirill: Ah, love it.
Kirill: So there you have it. That’s what data science is to our amazing friends and colleagues and students who where a DataScienceGO. And actually an interesting thing happened during this exercise. One time, somebody, when I asked the question, somebody also asked me what is data science to you, Kirill? I had to stop and think about it for a second. And what was in my mind at the time was an interesting word. It was family. It was very interesting. And the reason was because I was surrounded by people who I truly enjoyed being with. I truly just like loved being at DataScienceGO and connecting with everyone. And not just for the reason of networking, but for the reason of like feeling this friendship and feeling love.
Kirill: And it was so amazing and I felt like these people around me right now, and thank you so much for everybody who came to the DataScienceGO, I really feel like you are family to me, like we’ve created our own little family of data scientists. So yeah, I just wanted to put that out there that I really feel good around everybody and it’s so nice to meet in person. So if you have the chance to attend DataScienceGO 2020 I would love to see you there. I would love for you to become part of our family.
Kirill: And on that note, thank you so much for being here. I look forward to seeing you next time. Until then, happy analyzing.
