(00:05):
Welcome to FiveMinuteFriday with Dr. Jon Krohn, my guidance for success in your career and in your life.
(00:23):
Happy New Year! Like many around the globe, I’m excited to turn a new leaf in 2021, get vaccinated, and get back to a normal life. For me, that means visiting family and friends overseas, returning to work alongside my colleagues in the office, and attending data science conferences in person.
(00:44):
If you didn’t hear episodes 427 or 429, which aired in late December, you might be wondering who I am. Well again, my name is Jon Krohn. I’m the chief data scientist at a machine learning company called Untapt, where we develop and deploy deep learning models with focuses on natural language data and natural language processing models.
(01:06):
On top of my day job at untapt, I’m the author of Deep Learning Illustrated, a number one best-selling book that was translated into six languages. I guest lecture to graduate engineers at Columbia University, as well as to graduate students at the New York University Stern School of Business. In addition to doing stuff in person, I lecture live online via the O’Reily Learning Platform, as well as at leading conferences like the Open Data Science Conference.
(01:35):
I love publishing YouTube videos on machine learning, and in partnership with SuperDataScience, I recently released a Udemy course called Machine Learning Foundations. The linear algebra content for that is live now. And over the course of this year, we will continue to add additional content on the foundational subjects for machine learning, such as calculus, probability and statistics, algorithms, data structures, and optimization.
(02:03):
All of this is to say that not only do I love data science so much that I do it all day at work, but I’m so obsessed that I fill my evenings, weekends, and holidays with creating data science content for you, be it lectures, video tutorials or books.
(02:21):
So in 2020, Kirill and I met when I was a guest on this very podcast in episode 365, and to say we hit it off is an understatement. And a couple of months ago, Kirill blew me away with a surprise when he asked me if I’d be interested in hosting the podcast. I said yes immediately.
(02:41):
After recording two episodes per week since 2016, Kirill, in the 400 plus fabulous episodes that he’s recorded, has amassed an extraordinary global audience, including you, and I couldn’t wait to share exciting data science content with you as well. Kirill left supersized shoes to fill, but I’m committed to working tirelessly to maintaining the high standard that he set.
(03:08):
So 2021 truly does have marvellous things in store, both for you and for me. I can’t wait to share it with you. Next episode is odd numbered, so it will feature a guest. In it, Ben Taylor will be returning to SuperDataScience podcast for the fourth time. We’ll be discussing data science trends that are accelerating in 2021.
(03:30):
After that, it will be an even numbered episode in which I’ll be continuing Kirill’s legacy of providing quick career guidance in the FiveMinuteFriday format. My first FiveMinuteFriday will feature techniques for increasing your attention span. All right, are you excited? I’m excited. 2021, let’s do this year.
