SDS 106: Recap of our DataScienceGO 2017 Conference

Podcast Guest: Kirill Eremenko

November 17, 2017

Welcome to episode #106 of the Super Data Science Podcast. Here we go!

Today it’s Five Minute Friday time!
The DataScienceGO 2017 conference took place last weekend in San Diego, California. We had 12 speakers from different backgrounds and industries, almost 200 people in attendance, and more than 630 watching the livestream.
Aside from the technical and career sessions, people got a chance to network and learn from each other. We also had light moments of fun and dancing and the energy was just incredible.
I am so excited about how the event turned out. Some of you might want to get a recording of DSGO 2017, so in the next couple of weeks you will receive an email letting you know how you can do that.
We managed to interview attendees at the event to get feedback, and in today’s podcast, I want to share with you some of the testimonials and reviews.

Kirill: This is Five Minute Friday episode number 106. Recap of our DataScienceGo 2017 conference.

Hello, and welcome back to the SuperDataScience podcast. Super excited to have you on board and today we’re going to talk about the DataScienceGo 2017 conference which took place last weekend. It was an epic event, I’m super, super, happy and excited how it went and all those things that happened there. We had 12 different speakers from different industries and different backgrounds speak to our audience. We had people like Ben Taylor, Nick Cepeda, Dan Shiebler, Andy Kriebel, and many, many more, come to the conference and share their knowledge and wisdom and experience in the space of data science. And most importantly of course, their stories. We learnt so many different stories of how people got into this space.
The speakers were great but that’s not all that we had at the event. Of course, we had so much more. We had dancing, we had like literally on-stage and then everybody in the crowd was dancing and cheering, it was so much fun. Then we had networking, we had lunches, we had dinners. So many people came, we had almost 200 people attend the event and another 653 people, more than 653 people were watching over the livestream.
If you attended the event or if you were watching the livestream, then thank you so much, thank you so much for joining us and being part of this very epic first event that we had. We’re super excited how it went and we’re definitely going to be doing more in the future. We’re definitely going to be doing another one next year.
If you didn’t attend, then there’s still a chance for you to check out how the event went, you can get the recording. So, in the next couple of weeks, once our audio-visual team processes all of the footage from the event, we’ll be ready to share the recordings with you and you’ll be able to purchase them separately. So look out for that, we’ll be sending an invitation and you’ll be able to get those recordings if you haven’t purchased them yet.
On that note, what I wanted to share with you now is a couple of testimonials, a couple of reviews that we got at the event itself. Our crew was interviewing attendees at the event and speakers, and right now I wanted to share some feedback that we got from you guys. So here we go.
Testimony 1: The energy here is really powerful. It’s very powerful. I think that the team has really put together something really special. And the amount of energy the people have, the excitement, just the way the people are communicating with each other, is really exceptional. I’m very impressed.
Testimony 2: Where SDS I think is different is it’s kind of niche focused on not only data science and all of the hard realms within, like artificial intelligence and machine learning, but also really growing your career and just simply being better at what you’re doing and learning. You know, learning orientation.
Testimony 3: It was authentic. I think the big thing was that this event is very authentic. It’s not a sales pitch, it’s not someone trying to sell you something and rack up something else, it’s very authentic in how the speakers are presenting what they’ve done and what they’re going to do, and what their dreams are.
Testimony 4: I hear lots of presentations where people leave saying that was amazing but there’s no actions from it. It actually doesn’t help their career. It maybe inspires them a little bit, where this seems very actionable and very useful for people. I think this is one of the most useful conferences for anyone that wants to get into data science.
Testimony 5: I got a lot of value, there’s a lot of good points each of the speakers made. I’m excited to come back next year; hopefully there’s another one.
Testimony 6: I was hoping to gain insights deeper in the field from the talks, meet a bunch of people. And now what I did get from the conference, I met a lot of people, networking was great here. So many inspiring people, so many great stories, and the talks were also great, a lot of insights from, for example Ben’s style was cool and also Beau. Like the applicants in biological science, I really liked that.
Testimony 7: I was so excited about this conference. The moment the tickets were out, I bought the tickets in August and I got the early bird prices. And it’s amazing to be here so, thank you everyone.
Testimony 8: The reason I’m here is to make connections and get to know people and really get inspired to do what I want to do which s working more with data science.
Testimony 9: I think it’s going to be great. I don’t know anybody here. Maybe one or two people, but generally I don’t know anybody, so I’m excited to meet lots of new people and learn things that they’re doing that I can take back into the work that I’m doing.
Testimony 10: It’s nice. It’s out of the box and that’s very nice.
Testimony 11: You’re going to get to meet people who are like-minded, who want to learn, who want to grow together and get inspired, and I think it’s a great event.
Testimony 12: You can feel the energy here and you can talk to people and you can really get inspired. So if you want to get inspired, definitely, definitely come here.
Testimony 13: This event is career-driven, career-oriented, and really helping new aspiring data scientists to break into this field, to get to know the experts in the field and learn from them, and networking. Yeah, this event is really tailored to people like me.
Kirill: So, there you have it. That’s how the DSGO 2017 event went. My fair part was how we mixed in a lot of energy and motivation into the technical talks, into the backgrounds, into the stories of the speakers. So it wasn’t just your ordinary data science event with the technical stuff, but also we had stories of speakers and motivation, and a motivational speaker, Kyle Cease, came along. And of course, we had so much energy, we were dancing on the stage and the crowd was dancing, so it was really, really, really fun.
On that note, if you haven’t yet purchased the recordings of this event, then look out to your inbox in the next couple of weeks, we’ll be sending you a special invitation where you’ll be able to do that and secure a lifelong memory of this event and of course access all the sessions of the speakers.
And of course, I look forward to personally meeting you on the next DataScienceGo event in 2018.
