Welcome back to the Five-Minute Friday series of the SuperDataScience Podcast!
In this episode, Jon continues his habit tracking series with a look at a fifth daily habit: meditation. Listen in as he details his meditation sessions and how they fit into his daily routine.
This series has largely revolved around daily habits, and that theme continues today with Jon’s daily meditation habit. If you’ve been listening to SuperDataScience episodes for more than a year, you’ll be familiar with his meditation practice already (episodes #434 and 436). Every day — for thousands of consecutive days now — he takes part in a guided meditation session using the popular Headspace app.
Some days it’s only a few minutes with headphones during his commute. Other days, it’s a much more effective half-hour session on his couch. But, no matter the length of time, the key to successfully maintaining a habit is that we set an almost comically low bar for achieving the practice on a given day. Never does he feel guilty for only squeezing in a quick session, and by keeping the daily habit chain unbroken, it means that eventually, he is sure to get back to the more effective, quieter, longer sessions. In either case, even a few minutes of meditation can make a big difference to his day.
In general, Jon suggests making your habits extremely easy to attain. This ease keeps the tradition going long-term, and the easiest imaginable variation on a routine can nevertheless make a material difference to your day.
When he does have time for longer sessions, Jon wears his Muse electroencephalograph headband to receive auditory biofeedback on how focused his sessions are. That biofeedback helps him stay on track and has been a game-changer for him. If you’re interested in learning more, refer to Episodes 434 and 436 for a complete explanation.
And even though Headspace keeps track of his sessions on the app, Jon marks the binary habit off on his tracking spreadsheet too. An alternative approach could be to log how many minutes of meditation you carry out each day — this might nudge you in the direction of experimenting with longer sessions — but he chooses to keep it as simple as possible with a binary flag.
Stay tuned for more life-changing habits in next week’s Five-Minute Friday episode.
