Data Science is a big deal, it’s in demand, highly beneficial and not many people understand it. There are a number of misconceptions relating to the pathways in which you can embark on a career in data science.
In fact, data science didn’t exist until very recently, so many data scientists do not come from a background of data science. There a number of disciplines that can help you get a better understanding of this field, such as chemistry, mathematics, engineering…
However, what you really need is passion, drive and willingness to jump right in to challenges.
If you where there, you'd know that Ben Taylor's conference from DataScienceGO 2017 would prove this statement to be true.
You see, at DSGO, you’ll learn more about the people behind data science and how they got to where they are now, to help you become the data scientist you want to be.
So, here is Ben's story….
Ben was one of the key speakers at DataScienceGO 2017 and his talk was full of so many insights and tips that were otherwise not well known.
Nowaydays, Ben is the co-founder and Chief Data Officer of ZIFF, Inc., which is the only Unstructured Database in the world, which combines Real Intelligence and Artificial Intelligence. ZIFF brings this data, software and resulting solutions to your premises, or stores it on the cloud. This way, ZIFF gives you access to a fantastic AI team, without hiring a lot of new staff.
How He Started
Ben didn’t completely start out as a data scientist, because he went to college to get a degree in Chemical Engineering, but always had an interest in programming and numerical methods.
So much so, that he did internships in programming and coding and none of them were relevant to his Chemical Engineering degree, but his professors didn’t mind because he was using numeric methods. He went from playing with programmes in his spare time, to working as a data scientist in Intel Micron and HireVue.
In HireVue he found that the data collected from interviews meant that the AI could decipher whether the person would be given a job or not. And this
His talk at DataScienceGO 2017 went into detail about how exactly he came to be a data scientist, and the various ways in which data can be used by businesses.
(Some of) His Biggest Insights:
Ben outlined the necessity of not just gathering the data, but of ensuring the data is understood by people who are not from a data science background. In fact, it’s one of the most important skills, because executives, those in charge of money, do not always understand data and what it means.
The ability to not just understand data, but explain the ways in which it is beneficial to others is a highly marketable skill for data scientists. Accumulating data, building software, and formulating a strategy to implement this data’s value is huge.
The necessity of having multiple skill sets is that there are very few jobs you will not be able to do, and each of them will have a connection to data science. Being multi-disciplinary is a huge advantage, and sets you apart from the rest of the workforce.
Businesses, whether they are fully aware or not, are constantly creating data. Each sale they make, each website visitor they get, every email they send, is creating data. This data can then be mined and used to further sales. The data they create can be used by data scientists to create targeted marketing campaigns, based on a true understanding of who the clients and customers are.
So it is up to you, to transmit, demonstrate and show the true value of data in any given business – but how do you go about doing this?
How to Become a Rockstar Data Scientist
There is (fortunately) a key to becoming a great Data Scientist.
A Data Scientist that can effectively show, influence and enlighten many aspects of business, improving it in ways that you wouldn't believe to be possible. It's not easy, it's won't fall out of blue, but it is attainable.
Ben's conference last year on “How to be a Rockstar Data Scientist” was exactly focused on this. Check the video below and learn how you can move to the upper 5% of all Data Scientists.
This year, DataScienceGO returns to California and offers more opportunity for attendees to get insider information about all things data science. Last year, Ben Taylor was one of our key speakers, and this year the speakers will be just as enlightening and entertaining. He is returning in 2018, along with Kirill & Hadelin, Dan Schiebler of Twitter Cortex and many more!
Dan works to develop Machine Learning Models to make sense of the data that exists in the world. But when he isn’t do this for Twitter, he is in the Serre Lab of Brown University, as a Deep Learning Researcher trying to build neural networks that think just like humans do.
DataScienceGO 2018 is not just for people who already understand and work in the data science industry. If you are an aspiring data scientist, DSGO is a perfect place for you to meet like-minded people. You’ll get to listen to experts in data science, while also talk to people who have experienced all that you’ve experienced, and more.
For those who have already started on their journey to becoming a data scientist, you’ll get the chance to learn about the accompanying skills you need, to do more as a data scientist. The tips and tricks that other data scientists have used in their work has helped them get to where they are now, and these can help you progress in your career.
Similarly, if you are a business leader, marketing expert, CEO, CMO, or any other type of person in a profession that isn’t directly related to data science, then you’ll learn about why and how data can help further your business, reputation and profit.
With three full days of insights, lunches, networking and talks, you will leave DataScienceGO 2018 with a strong sense of what data science is, why you should become a data scientist, and how data science can really improve your career prospects.
The conference is taking place on Friday 12th to Sunday 14th of October 2018, in San Diego and there are special rates for students, groups and those who get early bird tickets. If you want to find out more, click here or you can contact us on: [email protected]
Last year, attendees got to learn a whole lot of secrets from world leaders in data science, things you’ll never get the chance to learn again. So before it’s too late, make sure you grab a ticket to DataScienceGO 2018 and get to San Diego in October for some super secret data science!
