SDS 518: Fail More

Podcast Guest: Jon Krohn

October 28, 2021

Welcome back to the FiveMinuteFriday episode of the SuperDataScience Podcast!

This week I’m offering quick advice on the importance of failure.

I’m doing a short episode this week on failing and that failing is good. If you’re not failing, that’s a problem. You’re not taking big enough risks or stretching your capacity. So, fail more and don’t take failure personally. Evaluate your failures as an objective data point and observe the new information to iterate, improve, and try again.
Who dares, wins.

(00:05):
This is Five-Minute Friday on Failing More.

(00:27):
The past three weeks, Five-Minute Fridays have been noticeably longer than five minutes so I’m letting the pendulum swing the other way today by giving you a nice quick one. Let’s dive right into it.
(00:38):
My message for you today is that failing is good. If you’re not failing at anything, that’s a much bigger problem. If you’re not failing, then that means that you’re not taking big enough risks: You’re not stretching your capacity and so you could be achieving much more than you are.
(00:57):
So, fail more. Then, when you do fail, don’t take it personally. Like the scientist that you are, evaluate this new data point objectively as though the experimental subject in this game of life isn’t you at all — it just happens to be a random person who coincidentally has the same name as you and is encountering the exact same environmental stimuli and responses.
(01:23):
Once you’ve observed the new information as objectively you can as a scientist, then iterate, improve, and try again. My favorite saying is qui audet adipiscutur, which is Latin for “who dares wins”. What this means is even if you don’t succeed at the goal you keep iterating at to achieve, you will learn about yourself, you’ll learn about the world, and the experience will open your mind to new possibilities that you could fail at or — if chance blows your way — maybe even succeed at.
(01:59):
All right, that’s it for today’s episode. Keep on rockin’ it out there folks and catch you on another round of SuperDataScience very soon.
